Biography

Professor Garcia-Bellido comes to Rochester from a postdoctoral research position at the University of Washington where he is best known for leading the group that discovered the production of top quarks via the weak interaction.  He received his undergraduate degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and his doctoral degree from Royal Holloway University of London.

In may of 2011, Garcia-Bellido was awarded the prestigious DOE early career award.

Research Overview

Professor Garcia-Bellido studies the properties and interactions of the fundamental building blocks of matter.  His research is primarily conducted at large particle accelerator facilities in Illinois and Geneva, Switzerland, where the experiments on which he collaborates study the production of new states of matter using the world's highest energy proton beams. His recent work focuses on searching to uncover new phenomena that must exist in order to complete the theory of the microphysical origins of mass. The beginning of collisions at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland will offer Professor Garcia-Bellido a new window into a wide variety of possible observables that can point to understanding how nature has chosen to provide the wide range of masses that are observed among the currently known elementary particles.
