Professor Visser received his Ph.D. in Physics (1992) from the University of Amsterdam. Since then he has held different positions in the Theoretical Physics group of the Free University, also in Amsterdam. Recently (2008) he has become Chair of the Electromagnetism Group in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Delft University of Technology. He is also a long term Visiting Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester
Prof. Visser's general interest is in the area of Theoretical Optics. He works on Coherence Theory, Scattering and Diffraction. He is also exploring ways to manipulate light on the nanometer scale with the help of surface plasmons.
