The Department hosts a broad range of regularly scheduled colloquia and seminars. Most talks last 50 min with 10 min for questions, and are preceeded by a social tea time. Regularly scheduled events include:

The Department Colloquium

A general lecture on a current topic of physics or astronomy, suitable for the entire Department. Given typically every other Wednesday at 3:45 pm. The current colloquium chair is Eric Mamajek. The list may be found here.

Astronomy/Astrophysics Seminar

Alternate Mondays at 3:45 pm. The current seminar chair is Adam Frank. The current list is here.

Condensed Matter Physics Seminar

Alternate Mondays at 3:45 pm. The current seminar chairs are Antonio Badolato and Stephen Teitel.

High-Energy/Nuclear Physics Seminar

Alternate Tuesdays at 3:45 pm. The current seminar chairs are Arie Bodek and Aran Garcia-Bellido.

Mathematical Physics Seminar

Quantum Optics Seminar

Graduate Research Seminar

A series of lectures for graduate students in which Department Faculty talk about their research programs. Alternate Fridays at 12 pm. The current seminar chairs are Arie Bodek and Steven Manly.

Graduate Teaching Seminar

A series of lectures for graduate students in which techniques for effective teaching are discussed. Alternate Fridays at 12 pm. The current seminar chairs are Arie Bodek and Steven Manly.

The Dexter Lectures

Named in honor of David L. Dexter, a former Condensed Matter Theorist in the Department, the Dexter Lectures bring a distinguished scientist to campus once each year for a colloquium lecture. Recent lecturers in this series have included: David Awschalom, William Bialek, Sir Roger Penrose, Albert J. Libchaber, Robert H. Austin, Charles H. Bennett, Britton Chance and Alexei A. Abrikosov. The current lectures chairs are Antonio Badolato, Yongli Gao, Andrew Jordan, Jonathan Shapir, and Stephen Teitel.

The Montroll Lectures

Named in honor of Elliott Montroll, a former Statistical Physicist in the Department, the Montroll Lectures bring a distinguished scientist to campus once every two or three years for a week's series of seminars and colloquium. Past lecturers in this series have included: Sir Michael Berry, Gerard 't Hooft, V. L. Ginsburg, S. Okubo, and H. M. Nussenzveig. The current lectures chairs are Antonio Badolato, Yongli Gao, Andrew Jordan, Jonathan Shapir, and Stephen Teitel.

The SPS/Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium

Each year the Society of Physics Students, the undergraduate society for physics and astronomy students, hosts a colloquium lecture by a distinguished scientist on a topic of current public interest.
