Undergraduate Teaching and Technology Internships
in Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, in conjunction with the Program for Women in Science and Engineering, is offering Undergraduate Teaching and Technology Internships in Physics and Astronomy for the academic year 2001-2002. The program's goals are to improve the quality of undergraduate teaching by increasing the number of instructors in physics labs, to enhance the involvement of women and minorities in science and science teaching, and to engage undergraduates in the integration of computer-related technology in physics classrooms. The program is open to all undergraduate science majors. Internships are available in teaching laboratories, recitations, and the use of technology in the classroom. The Program is coordinated by the Undergraduate Internship Committee chaired by Dr. Priscilla Auchincloss (Program for Women in Science and Engineering and Dept. of Physics and Astronomy) and Professor Lynne Orr (Dept. of Physics and Astronomy).
All interns receive extensive training prior to the Fall semester (typically 1-2 days at the end of the Spring semester and 2 days immediately preceding the start of classes in the Fall). During the academic year, they attend teaching seminars and organizational meetings. In addition to teaching experience, interns receive a stipend in the range of $500-$600 per semester for the academic year as well as 2 credits per semester for Physics 388/389 (Teaching Internship in Physics). Participants are also encouraged to apply for summer research internships under the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program.
Internships in Teaching Laboratories: Internships will be available for undergraduate students to serve as co-instructors, along with graduate TA's, in the introductory Physics and Astronomy labs. Laboratory interns may request to be assigned to laboratory sections in P113/121/141, P122/142, P123/143, P114, P243, A111 or A142. Participants instruct one laboratory session per week (10 per semester) throughout the year. Laboratory interns share all responsibilities with a graduate co-instructor, but do not grade lab reports.
Internships in Recitations: A small number of highly qualified undergraduates are selected to conduct recitations and grading in introductory physics courses. Recitation Interns may request to be assigned to P100, A102, A104, A142 (and possibly P121, P122, P142, P123, P143, P113, or P114). Recitation interns grade homework, unless the computer aided homework (CAPA) system is used in the course (currently used in P113/114, P121, P141, P122 and A102).
Internship in Teaching and Technology: In the introductory physics course  P103 (Physics of Music) computers have been integrated into the lectures and recitations. Interns will participate in running this class.
Application Process for Internships: A single application form covers all internships listed above. Students who have previously taken or are currently enrolled in the introductory Physics and Astronomy courses are eligible to apply. Participation is not limited to Physics and Astronomy majors, but laboratory or recitation interns must have completed the course in which they will assist (or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience) before the program begins. Selection of participants will be based on performance in physics courses and labs, overall academic standing, commitment to the goals of the program, written recommendations, personal statement, and interviews with the program coordinators. The deadline for application is March 1. Selection of interns will be announced in early April.
Other positions are available, paid by the hour. These include general computer system management, administrative support, CAPA maintenance and problem development, and course grading. Students may also indicate interest in these other positions on the application form.

For more information or to receive an application, please contact Ms. Connie Jones, Undergraduate Teaching Internship Program, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY 14627. Phone: (716) 275-5306; Email: connie@pas.rochester.edu Web: http://server-mac.pas.rochester.edu/yigal/tip.html.

Please attach to this form your resume, a photocopy of your grade transcript (a printout from the Web is acceptable), and a brief statement (~1/2 page, typed and signed) of your reasons for wanting to take part in this program. In addition, please request two letters of recommendation to be sent in support of your application. The letters may be from a science teacher and/or laboratory instructor.
