The RODiO Trap
Rotating Off-Resonant Dipole Optical Trap

The RODiO trap is comprised of a blue detuned, off-resonant, scanned laser beam and a weak one-dimensional axial molasses. This trap is the crucial step in the realization of a dynamical dark trap for ultra-cold neutral atoms. The design and realization of dark traps has been of signficant interest in the field of laser cooling because of the application of such traps to deep cooling of atoms (using evaporative or Raman techniques) or for precision spectroscopy. Furthermore, the trap has promise for applications to trapping multiple atomic species and to trapping ultra-cold molecules.
