On his department's behalf, Dan Watson served as Chair, July 2013-June 2019. Some deans and chairs think he is also director of the Mees Observatory, but he is not. Mees, having no budget, does not require a director.

On his university's behalf, Dan serves on the Research Policy Committee and on several administrative search and review committees. He is also faculty adviser for the Astronomy Club.

On behalf of the astrophysics community, Dan frequently serves as a referee for several journals and for NASA and NSF grant-review panels. He served as vice-chair of the Planetary Systems and Star Formation panel of the NAS/NRC 2010 Decadal Survey of Astronomy and Astrophysics ("Astro2010").
