Using Hipparcos, Paczynski98 finds that absolute magnitudes of red giant stars do not depend on their intrinsic color in the range 0.8 < (V-Ic) < 1.4. Local red clump giants have <(V-I)> = 1.01 and rms = 0.08. Paczynski98 finds the red clump luminosity function is well fit by M_I = -0.28 with dispersion rms ~ 0.2 mag (accounting for extinction among local red giants). For the local d<70pc population they find M_I = -0.192+-0.023 mag (for =50pc). Their absolute magnitude boundaries are approximately -1.4 < M_I < 1.1.
