University of Rochester Cloud Chamber

Most of the tracks seen in a cloud chamber are created by muons and electrons as they pass through at nearly the speed of light. These muons are created when high energy protons from within our galaxy collide with particles in the upper atmosphere. These tracks typically last for only a few seconds before vanishing.
