Prof. S. Teitel stte@pas.rochester.edu ---- Fall 2009

 Sunday, December 20, 2009

The final exam has been graded. The average was a 63 with a standard deviation of 17. You can see the histogram of scores on the Exams page, and you can see your own score on Blackboard.

The solutions to the final exam have also been posted on the Exams page.

Have a good break!

 Thursday, December 10, 2009

All lecture notes are now available on the Calendar page.

I will be available all next week. If you have questions, please feel free to email me them, or email to set up a time to meet.

Good luck on the final exam!

 Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Please fill out the online course evaluation form by going to http://www.rochester.edu/registrar/ and clicking on the Course Evaluation link. Your username is your NetID and your password is your NetID password. Your feedback is important to us! Your evaluation must be submitted by Dec. 22.

I will not be available during my usual office hour this Thursday. Please feel free to email me if you have questions or wish to set up a time to meet.

The Final Exam will take place Saturday, December 19, from 4 - 7 pm in Hoyt Auditorium. The Final counts 35% towards your final course grade. You will be allowed to bring one cheat sheet to the exam. The cheat sheet must be a regular 8.5"x11" sheet of lined paper, with one line of writing per one line on the page. You may write on both sides of the paper. You should bring a scientific or graphing calculator - please check your batteries before the exam as we will not have any calculators to loan out. On the exam there will be one question on electromagnetic induction, one question on ac circuits, and one question on electromagnetic waves or other phenomena related to the complete Maxwell equations. There will then be in addition one or two problems that can draw on content covered anywhere during the semester. The type of questions will hopefully be similar to those asked on in-class Exam 2.

Happy Halloween!

 Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Because I did not get as far as I expected in lecture this morning, I am giving an extension on Problem Set 7 until Monday, November 2, 2 pm. Solutions will be posted immediately thereafter so be sure to turn your work in on time.

The 2nd in-class exam will take place next week Thursday, Nov 5, in lecture. You will be allowed to bring a "cheat sheet" to the exam. This cheat sheet must be a regular 8.5"x11" sheet of ruled paper. You may write only one line of writing per ruled line on the page, and you may write on only one side of the page. The exam will cover material from lectures 9 (Stokes Theorem) through 17 (end of magnetostatics), however since the course material builds upon itself problems can refer to things covered in the earlier part of the course as well. No new homework will be given this week so that you may study for the exam.

An alternative solution to Purcell problem 3.8 is now posted on the Homework page. This solution views the problem in terms of an equivalent circuit of series capacitors.

 Tuesday, October 20, 2009

I will not be in my office during my usual office hour on Thursday this week (2:30-3:30). Instead I will be there earlier, from 1:30-2:30. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you cannot make this earlier time and wish to see me, please email to set up an appointment.

Courtesy of Prof. Wolfs, I have now put on reserve in the POA library a binder containing the text and complete worked out solutions to all the problems in the 1st edition of Purcell. After we have finished each chapter and had a homework assignment on that chapter, I will then add that chapters solutions to the binder. I hope these solutions will be helpful to you as you study the course material. You should always first try to work out a problem on your own, and struggle with it -- do not check the solutions too quickly. Only by struggling with problems will you learn the material!

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) starts its tutoring hours this week. Tutors will be present from 7 -- 9 pm, Monday through Thursday, in the POA Library (B&L 3rd floor). Please feel free to make use of this service if you have questions or need help. The SPS tutors are:

Mondays: Corey Adams and Robert Siller
Tuesdays: Ulascan Serica and Tyle Stelzia
Wednesdays: Greg Bentsen and Justin Ou
Thursdays: Chad Hunter and Dmitry Petropavlovskiy

Problem Set 1 is now graded. You can pick your homework up from your recitation TA. Please remember to put your recitation number (#1--4) on the top of your homework so that we can sort them to return to you. If you have a complaint about how your work was graded, please see first the TA who did the grading (in this case Jake Brock) to try and resolve it with him. If you do not reach a satsifactory outcome with the TA then you may speak with Prof. Teitel. Complaints will be considered when you feel the grader did not understand correctly the work you have done. Complaints should not be about the how points for a given problem were distributed.

Solutions to Problem Set 1 are now posted on the Homework page.

For this course, and for the rest of your career as a scientist or engineer, it is useful to have a good mathematical handbook to refer to for integrals, series, special functions, etc. While a lot of this information is now available online, I personally find a good hard copy book is very helpful. One such book I can recommend is the Mathematical Handbook of Formulas and Tables," by M. R. Spiegel, which is published as part of the Schaum's Outline Series by McGraw-Hill. I have used this book for over the last 30 years! It is not a requirement for this course, just a suggestion.
