PHY 217: Electricity and Magnetism I
The Final Exam has been graded, and the grades have been entered into Blackboard. The Final Exam and its Solutions are posted on the Homework page. You may pick up your exam by stopping by my office. Course grades have been awarded and submitted to the Registrar. Please take a few moments to fill out the course evaluation, available on Blackboard. Solutions to Problem Set 12 are now posted on the Homework page. After using the Levi-Civita symbol εijk in the last lecture, I realized that we in fact never went over that in the course. So I have now added some notes to explain what this symbol is and how one can use it to simplify calculations involving cross products. These notes can be found on the Lecture Notes page.
Notes through lecture 27 are posted on the Lecture Notes page. Solutions to Problem Set 12 will be posted Wednesday by 4pm. Your graded homework can be picked up from my office after Friday noon. The FINAL EXAM will be Monday, December 19, 7:15-10:15 pm in Gavett 312. There will be 4 prolems - one short answers question and three homework-like problems. The homework-like problems will focus on the topics of: solving electrostatic problems by separation of variables, electrostatic multipole expansion, dielectrics, magnetostatics. The short answers question can deal with material from any part of the course. You may bring one page of notes with writing on both sides of the page (one line of writing per line of the ruled page). I will give you copies of the formulas on the front and back inside covers of Griffiths. You may use no other notes, books, or electronic devices. Good luck on the final! My apologies! There is an error in problem 6 of Problem Set 12 -- I wrote the wrong problem number down from Griffiths. Please look at Problem Set 12 to see the correct problem (be sure to refresh your page to see the corrected problem).

The course evaluation form is now available on Blackboard. I would greatly appreciate your taking a few moments to complete the evaluation and give feedback on the course.

Probem Set 11, due Tuesday, December 6, is now posted on the Homework page. The previously posted Solutions to Problem Set 10 contained an error in problem 4 parts b and c. There will be a makeup lecture tomorrow, Wednesday, at 4:50pm in Morey 205 Our TI, Greg Loges, will now have extended hours in the POA: Thursdays 6:00-8:15pm and Fridays 12:00-2:15pm.

I have decided to extend the due date for Problem Set 10. It is now due by 4pm Monday, November 21, in the homework locker. Notes through lecture 18 are posted on the Lecture Notes page. Makeup lectures, to replace the two lectures canceled earlier in the semester, will take place on Wednesdays November 30, and December 7, during the usual workshop time period, 4:50 pm in Morey 205. Workshop will continue after Thanksgiving in the Thursday time slot only.

Problem Set 8, due Friday November 4, is now posted on the Homework page. Solutions to last week's workshop problem is posted on the Workshop page. Note: The MIDTERM EXAM will take place next week Tuesday, November 8, at the usual lecture time 12:30 - 1:45 in Gavett 312. The exam will cover all material up to and including the image charge method. There will probably be 3 problems on the exam, one being a set of short answer questions that you are meant to be able to answer without doing any involved calculation; the other two will be more like homework problems. Remember, you can bring one 8.5"x11" ruled sheet of paper on which you have written whatever notes you wish on one side of the sheet only. I will give you a copy of the equations and formulae that are on the inside front and back covers of Griffiths. You may use no other books or notes, nor any electronic equipment.

The MIDTERM EXAM has been postponed by one week. Instead of its orginal date of Nov. 1, the exam will now take place on Tuesday, Nov. 8, in class 12:30 - 1:45pm in Gavett 312. Notes through lecture 13 are now posted on the Lecture Notes page.
Problem Set 7, due Friday, October 28, is now posted on the Homework page. This assignment has several interesting problems that might require some extended thought -- so don't wait until Thursday night to get started!

Lecture today is canceled, I am home sick. Enjoy fall break, next lecture will be Thursday next week, Oct 20. In my statement of problem 2b in Problem Set 6 there was a sign error. It should be f = (1/2) σ (Eabove + Ebelow). I had a minus sign instead of a plus sign. It is now corrected.

Problem Set 1, due Friday, September 9, is now posted on the Homework page. This set is meant to help you review some basic vector algebra. Workshops will begin next week. There is now a new link on the homepage to a Workshop page that will contain problems discussed each week in workshop, and their solutions. But workshop is also the place where you can ask about anything going on in the course.
