The Final Exam and its Solution are now posted on the Homework page, as well as a histogram of grades. Your final exam grade may be viewed on the Blackboard system, and you may pick up your exam by stopping by my office.

Course grades have been submitted to the registrar.

Have a nice summer!

Your HW 8 is now graded. You can see your grade on the Blackboard system. You can pick your work up from me by stopping by my office.

Good luck on the final exam!

Please remember to fill out the online course survey.

 Saturday, May 2, 2015

Solutions to Problem Set 8 are now posted on the Homework page. I am sorry about the delay.

 Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Some sign errors were found in the solution to problem 3 on Problem Set 7 . The solutions online have been updated to correct the errors.

Please take a few moments to fill out the online course evaluation, available through the Blackboard system. Your feedback is very important to me!

Notes through lecture 28 are posted on the Lecture Notes page. Solutions to Problem Set 8 will be posted Thursday evening.

The Final Exam will be Tuesday, May 5, 8:30-11:30 am in BL 106. You may bring a one page "cheat sheet" of regular 8.5"x11" lined paper, with one line of writting per line of the paper. You may write on both sides of the paper. Other than the "cheat sheet" the exam is closed book, closed notes. The final exam is worth 35% of your final course grade. It will focus on material since the midterm exam (so roughly 25 of the 35% will be on material since the midterm, and the remaining 10% can come from anywhere in the semester; of course the material builds upon itself so to understand the later half of the course you need to understand the beginning half). There will be one short answer question like on the midterm, and probably 3 calculational problems. If you have any questions while you study for the exam, please feel free to contact me or stop by my office.

Good luck!

Notes through lecture 21 are posted on the Lecture Notes page.

 Tuesday, April 7, 2015

I have updated the last two pages of lecture 18 to make clearer the relationship between the reflection and transmission coefficients and the Poynting vector (energy current). This update also fixes some minor errors that were there previously. You might find this helpful for the 2nd problem on Problem Set 6.

 Monday, April 6, 2015

There was an error in the statement of problem 2 on Problem Set 6. The expressions for R and R|| should have a "square" outside the absolute value signs, as was given in the notes for lecture 18. The problem has now been corrected. If this confused you, you may take an extra day to turn in the assignment.

Notes through lecture 20 are now posted on the Lecture Notes page.

In workshop next week Levi will show how to get the real-space, real-time, wave equation Green's function G(r, t) from its Fourier transform G(k, ω) using complex contour integration.

The online TA survey is now open and available at: https://webapps.pas.rochester.edu/secure/phpQ/fillsurvey.php?sid=44

The survey will remain open until Monday, March 9. Please take a moment to complete the survey. Your feedback is very important to me, and I will appreciate it.

Lecture on Monday, March 2, is canceled.

Office hour on Tuesday, March 3, is canceled. I am out of town all this week.

Workshops are canceled next week, March 3 and 4. Instead Levi, our TA, will be available in the POA on Monday and Tuesday, March 2 and 3, from 5 -7 pm, to answer any questions you may have in preparation for the midterm exam.

The Midterm exam is Wednesday, March 4, 12:30 - 1:45 pm in BL 106. There will be three problems, one short answer and two similar to homework problems. The exam will cover all material through the end of the discussion of EM waves in a vacuum in lecture 11. I will give you copies of the equations on the front and back inside covers of Griffiths. You are free to bring in one 8.5"x11" ruled sheet of notes, with one line of writing (anything you want) per line of the sheet. You may write on only one side of the sheet. The exam is otherwise closed book.

There will be a make-up lecture the week after spring break on Friday, March 20, at 12:30 - 1:45 in BL 106.

Notes through lecture 12 are now posted on the Lecture Notes page. Solutions to Problem Set 4 will be posted tomorrow.

 Monday, February 23, 2015

Notes through lecture 11 are now posted on the Lecture Notes page.

Midterm exam will cover all material through the end of the discussion of electromagnetic waves in a vacuum (you are not responsible for Maxwell's equations in matter and later material).

 Wednesday, February 18, 2015

Problem Set 4, due Wednesday, February 25 in lecture, is now posted on the Homework page.

Notes through lecture 10 are posted on the Lecture Notes page.

The Midterm Exam will take place Wednesday, March 4, during the usual lecture period 12:30 - 1:45 in B&L 106. There will be three problems, one short answer and two similar to homework problems. The exam will cover all material through the end of lecture 11. I will give you copies of the equations on the front and back inside covers of Griffiths. You are free to bring in one 8.5"x11" ruled sheet of notes, with one line of writing (anything you want) per line of the sheet. You may write on only one side of the sheet. The exam is otherwise closed book.

Lecture on Monday, March 2, is canceled and will be made up on a subsequent Friday to be announced. I am out of town all that week at a conference, so my office hour that week is also canceled. The midterm exam will be proctored by the TA. If you have questions for me about the course material, as you prepare for the exam, it will therefore be best if you conact me before the end of next week.

Notes through lecture 9 are now posted on the Lecture Notes page.

As someone pointed out in lecture today, I did indeed have a mistake in my equations for the Fourier Series. What in class I called A0 should have been A0/2. This has been corrected in the posted lecture notes.

 Friday, February 13, 2015

Solutions to Problem Set 2 are now posted on the Homework page.

 Wednesday, February 11, 2015

Problem Set 3, due Wednesday, February 18 in lecture, is now posted on the Homework page.

Notes through lecture 8 are now posted on the Lecture Notes page.

Your graded Problem Set 1 was returned today in lecture, and grades have been posted on Blackboard. I urge you to carefully compare your graded work against my solutions posted on the website to make sure you understand everything about the correct solution to the problems. Mastering the homework problems is the best way to learn the material and perpare for the exams. If you have questions about the physics, please feel free to talk to me or Levi.

If you have a question or problem with how you were graded, you should first speak to the TA, Levi Greenwood. Only if you cannot get satisfaction from Levi should you contact me about a grade. If you think your grade recorded in Blackboard is in error (i.e. I typed it in incorrectly), then please contact me about it. All requests for changes to homework grades (whether a regrading issue or a recording issue) must be made within one week of the homework being returned to the class in lecture.

 Wednesday, February 4, 2015

Because we did not get as far in lecture today as I expected, the last problem #6 on Problem Set 2 will be deferred to Problem Set 3. Only the first five problems are due next Wednesday, February 11. In next Monday's lecture we will cover the material you need to do problem #5.

Solutions to Problem Set 1 are now posted on the Homework page.
