Problem Set 3

Due Wednesday, February 18, in lecture

  • Problem 1 [10 points]

    Griffiths 4th ed. problem 7.37

  • Problem 2 [20 points]

    Griffiths 4th ed. problem 8.17

Hint: Look back at example 5.11 to get the magnetic field needed for this problem.

  • Problem 3 [10 points]

    Griffiths 4th ed. problem 7.64

  • Problem 4 [10 points]

Work out the theory of the conservation of mechanical and electromagnetic energy that includes the possibility of there being magnetic charges.

To do this, you should use the Maxwell equations generalized to include magnetic charge (Griffiths 4th ed. Eq. (7.44)), and the generalization of the Lorentz force to particles with both electric and magnetic charge as given in the preceeding problem (Griffiths 4th ed. Eq. (7.69)). Show that the resulting electromagnetic energy density, and electromagnetic energy current, remain unchanged from what we derived in lecture.

  • Problem 5 [10 points]

    Griffiths 4th ed. problem 10.3

  • Problem 6 [10 points]

    Griffiths 4th ed. problem 10.6
