Physics 235: Classical Mechanics
Prof. S. Teitel stte@pas.rochester.edu ----- Fall 2001
Problem Set 6
Due Friday, October 19, 1pm, in metal homework locker outside B&L 166
- Problem 6-4 in the text [15 points]
- Problem 6-9 in the text [10 points]
- Redo the brachistochrone problem, example 6-2 in the text, only now using x as the horizontal axis and y as the vertical axis (increasing y points down). Find the functional f[y(x),y'(x);x] that appears in the integral to minimize. Use the second form of Euler's equation, applied to this functional f, to show one gets the same solution as Eq.(6.36) in the text, except with x and y suitably interchanged. [15 points]
