Physics 235: Classical Mechanics
Prof. S. Teitel stte@pas.rochester.edu ----- Fall 2001
Problem Set 11
Due Wednesday, December 12, 1pm
All problems are worth 10 points.
- Consider a cannon pointing due north that fires
a projectile with initial velocity vo
at an angle theta above the horizontal. The cannon
is located at a latitude angle lambda. When the
projectile hits the ground, how far has it drifted
in the transverse direction (i.e. the east-west
direction)? Does it drift to the
east, or to the west? You may do your calculation
to linear order in the angular velocity of the earth
(as in the examples done in lecture).
- Problem 11-12 in the text.
- Problem 11-17 in the text. Note: the shape
of the plate in the x1-x2
plane is arbitrary.
- Problem 11-18 in the text.
