PHY 415: Electromagnetic Theory I

Lectures: Mon. and Wed. 11:00 - 12:15 in B&L 269

Fri. 11:00 - 12:15 is also a time reserved for this course. I will make use of it on occassion to give make-up lectures, when I have to cancel a regularly scheduled lecture.

Textbooks: Recommended (not required):  
Classical Electrodynamics, 3rd edition by J.D. Jackson

Also on reserve in the POA Library:
The Classical Electromagnetic Field by L. Eyges
Classical Electricity and Magnetism by W.K.H. Panofsky and M. Phillips
and also the 2nd edition of Jackson

Note that the 2nd edition of Jackson uses CGS units throughout, while the 3rd edition uses MKS units in the first half and CGS units in the second half. In the course we will use only CGS units.

Examinations
Midterm:Friday, November 16, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, BL 269
Final:Thursday, December 20, 7:15 pm - 10:00 pm, BL 269

The exams will be closed book. The final exam will cover the entire course, but with an emphasis on material covered since the midterm. (Note - no cheat sheets allowed)

Homework: Homework must be handed in on time in lecture. Late homework will be penalized at the discretion of the instructors. You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but you must write up your solutions on your own.
