Course Information

Instructor: See   Contact Information
Lectures: Tues. and Thurs. 9:40 - 10:55 am in Morey 502

Textbook: The main textbook we will use is:
Solid State Physics by Ashcroft and Mermin

Also on reserve in the POA Library:

Modern Condensed Matter Physics by Girvin and Yang

Examinations: There will be no examinations in this course
Homework: There will be seven homework assignments, due roughly every other week. Assignments should be scanned and uploaded for grading via the Blackboard site for the class. Written homework must be legible. Upload your assignments in the form of a single pdf file. All assignments should be handed in on time -- request an extension if you need one. All assignments must be handed in, even if too late to receive credit, for you to receive a grade in the course. Homework will be graded by the class TA. If you have any questions about how you were graded, please speak with the TA first.
Academic
Honesty:
You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your classmates, but you must write up your solutions on your own. Outside consultations, or direct copying of a classmate's work, or copying from solutions obtained elsewhere, will be considered a violation of academic honesty and suitably penalized. See the University's general Academic Honesty Policy for further information
Grading: Each homework assignment will be graded on a scale of 1 -- 10. I will not be grading in exacting detail, I will be looking for effort and to see if you are going in the correct direction. It will be up to you to read the detailed posted solutions, and to ask questions, to see how to correct any mistakes you may have made.

Your final course grade will be a letter grade, based primarily on the homework. Put in good effort and get things reasonably correct and you will get an A.
