The HV for the MINOS detector is supplied by a Lecroy 1440
supply. The HV in a crate in the MINOS detector was varying in various
channels. We speculated that the problem was the
1445 crate controller. MINOS did not have a working
spare on hand. On May 13, we brought in a non-working module to
PREP for an exchange. PREP did not have a spare on hand in
their database. We then went upstairs so see if there were any
repaired unit. The technicians were gone. One person gave
us a possible spare from a crate on the floor. However,
it was not a verified spare. We installed this unit, but
most of the channels did not go up on HV. Its problem appeared
to not be the problem we were having.
Later that afternoon a technician from PREP notified us that
another untested crate controller had been located. We returned
to PREP and obtained this module. When we tried it, the HV
for all channels was 15-25V lower than the demand. Again, this
unit appeared to be exhibiting a different problem
than the one we had been trying to solve.
We got a verified work spare on May 16.
