Dr. Shaffer received his BSc in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 2013 before pursuing a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Iowa. There, he studied the theory of strongly coupled plasmas, completing his dissertation titled “Theory of Collisional Transport in Ultracold Neutral Plasmas” in 2018. He went on to Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he worked as a postdoctoral research associate on the electronic and radiative transport properties of high-energy-density plasmas. He joined LLE in 2021 as an assistant scientist. His research interests are kinetic theory, plasma atomic physics, and the electronic structure and transport properties of matter at extreme densities and temperatures.
