Pawel de Barbaro received his M.S. in Physics (1984) from the Jagelonian University (Krakow, Poland), and his Ph.D. in Physics (1990) from the University of Rochester. He was a postdoctoral associate at Rochester (1990-1994). He was promoted to Senior Research Associate Professor in 1995, and to Senior Laboratory Engineer and Senior Scientist in 2003. Dr. de Barbaro was an SSC postdoctoral Fellow (1990-1991), served as the Chairman, US-CMS HCAL Institutional Board (2000-2003), and CERN Scientific Associate (2003-2004). Since 2003, he has been stationed at the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland and has been serving as the US CMS Installation and Commissioning Co-ordinator.Dr. de Barbaro's professional activities include serving as the overall Level 3 Manager for the CMS Hadron Calorimeter HCAL Optics production (1995-2003); responsibilty for the design of optical readout system for the CMS Hadron Barrel Calorimeter; Chairman of US-CMS HCAL Collaboration Board (2000-2003); corresponding author for Nuclear Instruments and Methods article summarizing the CMS HCAL test beam results (2002); serving as a member of the CDF internal review committee for inner tracker upgrade (1998); serving on the Department of Energy/NASAN review committee of the GLAST Detector (Stanford 2002-2003); CMS Review Committee of the HE Detector, Dubna Russia (2001); CMS HCAL Testbeam Coordinator at CERN (2003- 2004); CMS HCAL Installation & Commissioning coordinator at CERN, 2003-current. He has mostly been working with Professor Bodek's research group in collaboration with senior scientists Howard Budd and Willis Sakumoto.
Research
Pawel de Barbaro's research interest is in the field of Experimental High Energy Physics . His MS Thesis (Comparison of proton-nucleus interactions with non-annihilation interactions of antiproton-nucleus at 120 GeV/c) was done at Jagelonian Universtiy under the supervision of Professor K. Rybicki. His Ph.D. thesis (Search for neutral heavy leptons from neutrino-nucleon interactions at the FNAL Tevatron) was done at Rochester under the supervision of Professor A. Bodek.Pawel de Barbaro's current and previous research interests include the physics of W's, Z's and Dileptons ( CDF ,CMS ) , electron-nucleon scattering (SLAC E140) and in neutrino physics (CCFR/NuTeV) . In the area of instrumentation, de Barbaro's research is in the area of scintillating tile/optical-fiber hadron calorimeters.
Pawel de Barbaro is currently involved in the CDF and CMS experiments, and is in charge of the running and analysis of the CMS testbeam effort at CERN. He is also in charge of the overall installation of the US contributions to the CMS detector at CERN.
