Prof. S. Teitel stte@pas.rochester.edu ----- Fall 2001

Problem Set 10

Due Wednesday, December 5, 1pm, in metal homework locker outside B&L 166

  1. Problem 9-5 in the text [5 points]

  2. Problem 9-48 in the text. You might find it helpful to recall you earlier work on problem 8-22 from Problem Set 9. [15 points]

  3. Problem 10-1 in the text [5 points]

  4. Using the relation dervied in lecture between the acceleration as measured in the inertial fixed frame, and the acceleration as measured in the non-inertial rotating frame (see Eq.(10.25) in the text), rederive your solution to problem 2-2 that you did in Problem Set 2. Regard the spherical coordinate basis vectors as the basis vectors of the rotating coordinate system, and proceed in a similar manner as was done in lecture to derive the expression for velocity in spherical coordinates. Hint: many of the terms in Eq.(10.25) vanish! [15 points]
