 Problem 1 [10 points]
Griffiths problem 4.7  one way to do this problem is to think of the dipole as being described by a charge distribution ρ(r) which is neutral but has a nonzero dipole moment p. Consider the interaction energy between this ρ(r) and the potential V^{ext}(r) that gives the external electric field E. You should assume that V^{ext}(r) varies slowly on the length scale over which ρ(r) is spread out.
