PHY 217: Electricity and Magnetism I
Prof. S. Teitel stte@pas.rochester.edu ---- Fall 2016
Problem Set 12
Due Wednesday, December 14, by noon in the homework locker
- Problem 1 [5 points]
Griffiths problem 5.6a
- Problem 2 [5 points]
Griffiths problem 5.10a
- Problem 3 [10 points]
Suppose you wanted to find the magnetic field of the circular loop of Example 5.6 at a point P which is not directly above the center of the loop (i.e. not on the z axis). Choose coordinates as in the figure below, with P lying in the yz plane. Set up the integrals from which you could, in principle, calculate Bx, By, and Bz at point P, and then explicitly evaluate Bx.
- Problem 4 [10 points]
Griffiths problem 5.17
- Problem 5 [10 points]
Griffiths problem 5.19
- Problem 6 [10 points]
Griffiths problem 5.37b -- Use the results from this problem to compute the vector potential for the spinning shell in the dipole approximation. Then use the exact answer for A, given for this problem in Example 5.11, to show that the dipole approximation gives the exact answer.
